A striking vintage Arabia Ritari vase, designed by celebrated Finnish ceramic designer Raija Uosikkinen and produced in Finland between 1986 and 1989.
“Ritari” means “Knight” in Finnish, referring to the distinctive medieval-inspired figures that dominate the decoration. The vase features an elaborate scene of a richly dressed knight accompanied by stylised birds, surrounded by architectural and geometric ornamentation.
The restrained palette of deep cobalt blue, brown, ochre, grey and cream gives the piece a particularly strong graphic character. Fine details, repeated geometric borders and stylised forms are characteristic of Raija Uosikkinen’s decorative work for Arabia.
The Ritari decoration was produced using screen-print decoration (serikuvakoriste) and had a relatively short production period from 1986 to 1989.
The underside carries the original ARABIA FINLAND factory mark together with the printed signature:
